Calming Bands

Oh no, Mummy’s decided to buy us some calming bands – apparently they are meant to stop us from barking so much and stop our hyperactivity.  We never used to bark at other dogs before we had our operations last year, but after being shut away for 6 weeks and then another 6 weeks of restricted recovery we just get so excited when we see friends to play with.  You can read about them here:

Sorry, Mummy

Oh dear, Mummy left us in the lounge whilst she went and made tea, so we could snuggle on our new covers this evening, but then she heard us growling at each other – always bad news for Mummy…  She came to find us and discovered that we were playing tug-of-war with one of our lovely new covers.  And we’d pulled some of the binding off along one side – it took Mummy 20 mins to sew it all back together.  She says we’re now not allowed in the lounge unless she’s in there with us 🙁

Snuggle Covers

Mummy’s bought some new covers for our lounge settee and chairs so that we can snuggle in them and keep warm – but I think Hal’s taken it to the extreme – what do you think?

Rapid Recovery

I wish I knew how Hal did it…

Within the space of 24 hours he’s gone from a happy puppy to hardly able to walk, and back to a happy puppy again.  And he’s been stealing my toys to play with, he’s feeling so much better.

I’m so happy for him, but I just wish he’d take things gently again – his leg can’t be 100% if he can end up as crippled as he was yesterday.  I think Mummy’s going to be watching him real closely for a while…

Poorly Elbow

Oh no, Hal’s done his elbow in today.  🙁

We had been out on a walk in the fields with Mummy and our Cavie brothers, and Hal was running around and bugging me as much as always.  And we met a lovely 6 month old puppy to play with.  And then Mummy put us all on leads and started walking back home along the road – we generally go back that way so our paws can get cleaned and dried by the pavement, rather than coming straight out the field into the house.  We were part way home when Mummy met one of our friends – a lovely man who walks two greyhounds for his neighbour.  He stopped to have a chat with us and gave Hal and me a cuddle as he always does.  And Hal had a bit of fun trying to grab a plastic bag out of his hand.  It was all such innocent fun, but as soon as we started to walk away Hal couldn’t put any weight at all on his leg / foot.  As it was so sudden and extreme, Mummy assumed that he’d stepped on something and maybe had a thorn in his pad (that’s happened to me before and it’s agony – but as soon as Mummy has removed the thorn all is OK again), but Mummy couldn’t find anything.  She tried walking him again, and he still couldn’t walk, so Mummy rechecked his paw and massaged his leg, elbow and shoulder, but she couldn’t find anything wrong.  Mummy was trying to work out how to carry Hal home whilst at the same time walking the 3 of us, but Hal said he’d try to hobble home so she didn’t have to (he’s such a heavy weight for Mummy, and it wasn’t too far for him).

Well, Mummy made Hal rest all day, not letting him move around much, and I’m pleased to report that his leg is getting easier for him to walk on.  We’re all hoping that he just landed awkwardly and twisted it and that it will recover quickly.  But brother Hal, you do still need to be careful – it’s only 3½ months since your operation.

Here’s a photo of Hal cuddling me, after I passed on hugs from all his friends:

Stair Gates

Having shown Mummy how much better I’m feeling, she agreed to leave our stair gate open today so we can go and relax in the sun in our bedroom.  It’s the first time she’s let us up there during the day since my operation – and it felt lovely to curl up on our beds with the sun shining on our backs.  And I was very good in return and didn’t play on the stairs or keep running up and down them.

A Failed Student

Oh dear, training didn’t go very well today, for two main reasons:

  1. Something had passed through the training field in the morning and left such lovely scents on the ground – how could I possibly ignore them, even though Mummy wanted me to work?
  2. Mummy has always taught us with both voice and hand signals (as brother Shandy is going deaf he relies more on hand signals), but today Mummy was having to give me instructions at a distance.  Well, if she used hand signals then I just ran towards her before doing the action, and if she didn’t use hand signals then I wasn’t sure what to do.  So it was back to basics to learn instructions purely on voice only – she told me what she wanted and I tried really hard to work it out, but as I wasn’t sure I tended to get in the position and then immediately return to a sit – Mummy said I wasn’t in the position long enough for her to reward me.

I’m so glad Cousins Gizzy and Sparky came round to play this afternoon, as I was feeling a little down after class.
